  1. Kamakura Station East Exit, Tourist Information Center

Meet your guide in front of the Tourist Information Center at Kamakura Station's East Exit. Your guide will introduce the day's route, share what makes each shrine unique, and set the tone for a quiet, crowd-free morning. This is also the moment to put on comfortable shoes and take a deep breath before stepping into old Kamakura.

  2. Genji-yama Park

Walk up through ancient cedar and oak forest as the city below is still waking up. Your guide explains how this ridge was a strategic stronghold for the Minamoto clan, weaving together geology, history, and the feeling of the living forest around you. The morning mist that lingers in the canopy makes this stretch feel centuries removed from modern Japan.

  3. Sasuke Inari Shrine

Dozens of vermilion torii gates line a mossy stone path leading up to this tucked-away fox shrine, dedicated to Inari, the deity of good fortune. At this hour you will likely have it entirely to yourself — a rare privilege even for locals. Your guide shares the legend of how Yoritomo heard a prophetic voice here before his rise to power.

  4. Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine

Step through a tunnel carved into the rock to enter a hidden valley shrine where spring water has flowed for nearly 800 years. Your guide explains the ritual of washing coins and offerings in the sacred spring, and the story of Minamoto no Yoritomo's dream that led to the shrine's founding. The cave interior, lit by lanterns, is atmospheric and cool even in summer.

  5. Kuzuharaoka Shrine

Perched on a forested hilltop, this shrine is dedicated to Nitta Yoshisada and is known for matchmaking and warding off evil. The approach through oak woodland opens suddenly to a bright clearing with views toward the hills. Your guide explains the shrine's connection to the fall of the Kamakura shogunate and the tradition of breaking a 'demon stone' for good luck.

  6. Kamakura Station East Exit

The return walk descends gently through residential back lanes, offering a final glimpse of everyday Kamakura before arriving back at the station. Your guide will point out a good local coffee spot or bakery to reward your early start. This is also the moment to ask any last questions about the shrines, local life, or your next destination.
