Every journey we make is built by hand, one at a time — and every choice about where our guests go, and who benefits from their visit, is deliberate.
YURAGI designs and operates fully tailor-made private journeys across Japan. Our approach is simple: build each journey by hand, one at a time, with care. Because nothing is mass-produced, we can be intentional about the impact of every itinerary — and this page describes what we actually do, in plain terms. Where we are still developing, we say so.
Some of the crafts and practices at the heart of a YURAGI journey — kintsugi, hand-carved hanko seals, nerikiri confectionery, the tea ceremony, zazen at working temples — are carried by an ageing generation, with fewer successors every year. Across Japan, many traditional trades face a real shortage of people to carry them forward.
Helping keep them alive is central to what we do. By bringing engaged, well-prepared guests to these makers and masters — through proper channels and at fair rates — we help make their craft economically viable, and give the people who hold these traditions a reason, and the means, to continue. Guest spending goes directly to these small, often family-run ateliers, studios, and restaurants. A local, nationally licensed guide prepares guests before each encounter, so a visit is an act of understanding, not consumption.
Japan's famous sights are extraordinary — and increasingly crowded. So we look further. We actively seek out and share the country's quieter wonders: lesser-known temples and neighbourhoods, and regions beyond the Golden Route — Nara, Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura, Hyogo, the Fuji area, and more, across 16 regions of Japan. To keep that sense of discovery intact, our journeys are private and small-group, and timed to the calm hours — Arashiyama's bamboo grove, for instance, is always first thing in the morning.
We are honest about where we are on this path. Over the coming seasons we intend to:
